How good is public transportation in Chicago?

I’ve never been there, but I was wondering how good the public transport system in the city? Could a person ride, such as 10 miles to work each day and rely on public transport without encountering too many headaches?

Depends on where you’re going in the city. The L and/or the subway are the most reliable forms of transprotation one can use. The line trains and sometimes the city bus system are pretty consistent and on time. If you’re going on the outer reaches of the city, maybe the Chicago suburban area, like Joliet or the south suburbs, then I’d suggest using the Metra train.

It’s excellent if you are going into, out of, or around the downtown area.

Although people who live here complain about it, CTA is one of the best transit systems in the world.

Whether bus or train, you can get pretty much anywhere in the city or suburbs fairly easily. CTA’s TripFinder makes it easy to plot out the best route for yourself, as well as how to transfer.

The METRA system here is also excellent for connecting to the suburbs.

Depends where. If you’re working and living in the city itself, particularly in and around downtown, absolutely. It’d be far more convenient than a car. But as soon as you get out to the outskirts of Chicago, it gets a bit harder. The Metra trains are good, and reliable, but they only run on the hour (if that) and they’re only good if they happen to go near where you happen to go.

For example, I used to work and live in the city and I took the elevated trains back and forth, and it was easy (even relaxing, because I could read on the way). But after a while I was living in the city and working in the far suburbs, and it was, unfortunately, faster to drive.

If your are going 10 miles to the Loop(downtown), then you can make it no problem on public transportation. The CTA buses can take you from your house to the nearest L train station, and you can ride that into downtown.
